The Metal Detector
| 07.05.2020
After a while you get a sixth sense about people who approach you on the seafront. The majority are extremely nice, friendly, appreciative, and courteous. The rest are odd coves indeed. As I said, you can spot them - sometimes literally a mile off. A useful tactic is to keep playing and pretend that you have not noticed them. This works in most cases - but not today. He approached from the West and I just knew he was going to stop.
"What's that thing?" he said pointing to my saxophone. "It's a metal detector" I replied. "Found much today?" he said. "No" I answered. He paused and sucking a thoughtful tooth said "I bet the blokes that got here early had all the best stuff. You need to get here earlier". I thanked him for his advice and he went on his way.
